The island is famous for the National Sea Park which is created in order to protect the rare seal type known as Monachus - Monachus., and in 1992 the Alonissos Marine Park was created to protect these seals and other animals.
The National Marine Park of Alonissos Northern Sporades (Greek: Εθνικό Θαλάσσιο Πάρκο Αλοννήσου Β. Σποράδων, ΕΘΠΑΒΣ) was founded by P residential Decree on May 16, 1992 was the first to be founded in Greece and is currently the largest marine protected area in Europe (approximately 2.260 Km2 ).
